Cervical Cancer

WHAT IS THE HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS?

The Human papillomavirus (HPV) has 100 types, of which about 40 infect the genital tract.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The majority of infections cause no symptoms. Although most infections are asymptomatic self-limiting warts can appear. Genital infection by HPV is associated with anogenital cancers in both men and women. Persistent genital HPV infection predisposes cervical cancer. Sometimes only a cervical swap can be indicative of a silent invasion of the cervix.

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS?

About 99 percent of cervical cancer is associated with the HPV. It is the second most common women cancer worldwide and there are about 0.5 million cases per year with 250.000 death per year.
