Mumps

WHAT IS MUMPS?

Mumps is an infection caused by the mumps virus. The incubation period is 21 days. It is transmitted via droplet with coughing and sneezing.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The symptoms are generally not severe in children which are swelling and pain of one or both parotid glands lasting 4 – 8 days.

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS?

In teenage males and men infertility or subfertility are more common as in children. One in four men older than 12 years gets swelling of the testis. Other rare complications include brain infection, hearing loss, pancreas infection and involvement of other organs. Fatal cases even with complications are rare.
